Medicine logbook (Medicinlogbog)

Available in Iceland too — but this page describes the Danish rules

The logbook was built for Denmark and has since been switched on for Iceland as well: it is gated on supportsTreatmentLog, which is true for both regions, not on the region itself. Everything below about the legal side — VetStat, the 5-year retention, the cascade rule, produktresumé — is Danish and does not apply in Iceland. Icelandic users should read Lyfjaskráning instead, which describes the same screens without the Danish law. The product list in the app is Danish-only for now, in both regions.

Danish sheep holdings must keep a written record of every medical treatment given to the flock — the date, which animal or group was treated, which product was used, how much, and the withdrawal period. The log must be kept on the holding for at least 5 years and shown at an inspection.

The log is never submitted anywhere. Veterinarians report their own use to VetStat themselves. LAMB stores your entries and prints the logbook you hand over at a control visit.

The app shows this in Danish. Danish terms are given below with an English gloss, so this page is usable for both the farmer and the veterinarian.

1 · Open the logbook

On the Dashboard, in the Danish reporting section, tap the Medicinlogbog card. Its number is not the number of entries — it is the number of treatments whose withdrawal period is still running (Aktive tilbageholdelser), because that is the food-safety-critical state. If it shows 0, no animal is currently held back from slaughter on account of a logged treatment.

The same list is available in the web app under Treatments.

If nothing is logged yet you'll see "Ingen behandlinger registreret" — no treatments recorded.

2 · Record a treatment

Tap + to open Registrer behandling (Record treatment).

Field (Danish) English Required?
Behandlingsdato Treatment date Yes — defaults to today
Dyr eller gruppe Animal or group Yes — see below
Præparat Product Yes
Mængde Quantity, e.g. "5 ml" No
Tilbageholdelsestid (dage) Withdrawal period in days No — but see section 4
Årsag / diagnose Reason / diagnosis No
Dyrlæge Veterinarian No
Bemærkning Comment No

Enkelt dyr (single animal) or Gruppe (group) is a choice, not both. For a single animal you enter its ear tag or number. For a group you describe it in your own words — "alle lam 2026" (all lambs 2026), or the name of a group you keep in LAMB. Whole-flock treatments such as a worming round are normally logged as a group, which is one entry rather than three hundred.

Quantity is free text on purpose. Products and units vary too much for a fixed unit field to help.

3 · The medicine list

The Præparat field has a list button that opens a searchable list of products commonly used on Danish sheep. Search by product name or by category (Ormemiddel, Antibiotikum, Vaccine, and so on), and tap one to fill the name.

The field is also plain text. If your product is not in the list, type it — nothing is lost, and the list is a convenience, not a restriction.

Picking a product fills the product name and nothing else. It does not fill the withdrawal period. That is deliberate, and the next section explains why.

4 · The withdrawal period — LAMB does not suggest one

You enter the withdrawal period yourself, from your veterinarian's instruction (anvisning). LAMB never suggests a number and never fills one in for you.

This is a deliberate design decision, and it is worth explaining, because an earlier version of the app did prefill a suggested figure.

We built a reference list of withdrawal periods for common sheep products and then checked every entry against the official Danish product summaries (produktresuméer) published by Lægemiddelstyrelsen. Most of the entries did not survive the check. Several suggested a shorter period than the product summary states, which is the direction that puts residues in meat. We removed the numbers rather than publish figures we could not stand behind.

Three things also became clear during that check, and they are the reason we do not intend to reintroduce a simple per-product number:

  • One number per product is not enough. The correct period can depend on the route of administration — the same product can carry a few days' withdrawal given intravenously and a month given intramuscularly — and sometimes on the dose volume.
  • Many products used on sheep are not authorised for sheep. When a veterinarian prescribes under the cascade (kaskadereglen), the product summary's figure no longer applies directly and a longer period is required by law. See section 8.
  • The authoritative figure for your animal is the one your vet gives you, on the written instruction that must accompany a prescription-only medicine for a food-producing animal. That is the number that belongs in the log.

LAMB does not give veterinary advice

LAMB records what you enter. It does not calculate, verify, or advise on withdrawal periods, and it cannot tell you whether an animal is safe to send for slaughter. Ask your veterinarian.

If a product genuinely has no withdrawal period, leave the field empty.

5 · What the withdrawal period does once entered

Once you enter a number of days, LAMB counts from the treatment date and shows the result on the entry:

  • Tilbageholdelse til {date} — withdrawal still running, until and including that date. Shown with a warning icon.
  • Tilbageholdelse udløb {date} — the withdrawal period ended on that date.

The count is date to date, so it does not shift during the day. Entries with a running withdrawal are what the Dashboard card counts.

Meat only

LAMB currently tracks the slaughter withdrawal only. It does not track a separate milk withdrawal, which most product summaries state separately. If you milk your sheep, keep the milk withdrawal in mind yourself — the app will not remind you.

6 · The logbook for a control visit

In the logbook screen, the PDF button in the top bar produces the logbook as a document you can print, email, or hand over at an inspection. It contains the holding's identification (farm name, CHR number, besætningsnummer), the number of entries, and every treatment in date order, oldest first, with date, animal or group, product and reason, quantity, withdrawal period, and veterinarian.

The document also states the retention rule on the page itself, so an inspector can see it.

The PDF is produced in the phone or tablet app

The logbook list is available in the web app, but the PDF export is currently in the mobile app only.

7 · Editing and deleting

Tap an entry to edit it, or use the delete icon. A deletion asks for confirmation and cannot be undone.

Entries sync between your devices and the web app, and they keep working offline — a treatment logged in the barn with no signal uploads by itself when the device is back online.

The log is a legal record

Because the logbook must be kept for 5 years and shown at inspection, correct an entry rather than deleting and re-creating it where you can, and do not clear old entries to tidy the list.

8 · For veterinarians

What LAMB is: an on-farm record, kept by the farmer, of treatments given. It is the fortegnelse the holding must be able to produce, not a reporting channel. LAMB does not submit anything to VetStat, does not issue or store prescriptions, and does not replace your written instruction.

What LAMB deliberately does not do: suggest a withdrawal period. The field is filled in by the farmer from your instruction. If you would like the log to be unambiguous, state the withdrawal period in days on the instruction, and note the route where the period depends on it.

Two things you may want to point out to a client using LAMB:

  • If you prescribe under the cascade for a product not authorised for sheep, the withdrawal period is not the one printed on the package. Per Regulation (EU) 2019/6 Article 115, as set out in Fødevarestyrelsen's guidance to the veterinary medicines regulation, the period for meat from mammals must be at least the longest withdrawal in the product summary multiplied by 1.5, or 28 days if the product is not authorised for food-producing animals at all. The farmer has no way of knowing this from the product packaging.
  • LAMB tracks the slaughter withdrawal only. If milk from the flock is used for human consumption, the milk withdrawal needs to be handled outside the app for now.

The authoritative source for a Danish product is its produktresumé, published by Lægemiddelstyrelsen at produktresume.dk.

If you see something in the app that could mislead a farmer about a withdrawal period, please tell us — that is exactly the feedback we most want. Contact details are on the welcome page.

What LAMB does not do

To be explicit, so nobody discovers it at the wrong moment:

  • It does not report to VetStat. Your veterinarian does that for their own use.
  • It does not tell you a withdrawal period, or check the one you entered.
  • It does not track a separate milk withdrawal.
  • It does not warn you at slaughter time. The Dashboard shows how many withdrawals are running; it is up to you to look before sending animals.
  • It does not store prescriptions or veterinary instructions. Keep those as you do today.
