Ask — a conversation about your farm

On the Ask page (at the top of the menu, under Today) you ask about your farm in your own words, as in a chat. LAMB answers right on the page — usually with a table computed from your farm's data — and you can carry on asking from the answer.

You also get there from the search box at the top of the page: when what you type is a question rather than a page to open, it goes straight to Ask.

How to ask

  1. Type your question in the box at the bottom of the page.
  2. Press Enter (or the arrow). Shift + Enter starts a new line.
  3. "Thinking…" shows while LAMB works, then the answer appears below your question.

When the conversation is empty, the page shows a few example questions — click one to try it.

Examples

You ask LAMB answers with

What LAMB can answer

  • Weight — each animal's last weighing in the period, or every weighing of one animal.
  • Lambs born — how many lambs were born, counted or listed, also split by sire, sex or birth year, or only e.g. the twins.
  • Lambs per ewe and prolificacy (lambs per lambing).
  • Head count of animals alive on the farm now.
  • Your groups — each group with its head count and the day it was created; the newest group is named above the list.
  • Facts about animals — e.g. name, ear tag, date of birth, parents, colour, horns, fate, DNA, breeding values and photos.

You can narrow the question down:

  • Which animals — lambs, ewes, rams, one group, one animal, several animals to compare, offspring or siblings.
  • Period — this year (the default), last year, the last 3 months or all time.
  • How — a list, top 10, bottom 5, average, total or how many.
  • Split by — sire, birth year, group or sex.
  • One condition — e.g. with DNA, with a photo, horned, rams with a total breeding value over 110.

Charts and downloads

Ask for a graph or a bar chart and the answer is drawn as a chart. Ask for Excel, PDF or CSV and a button to download the file appears with the answer.

Reading the answer

Every answer starts with "Understood as" — how LAMB read your question: what was measured, which animals and which period.

Always check \"Understood as\"

AI can misread a question. The figures themselves are computed straight from your farm's data, but if the question was misread the answer is to a different question. Read "Understood as" before you trust the number.

At the bottom of the answer you see how many animals or records it is based on. From the table you can open each animal's card.

Open as a page opens the answer on its own page with its own address — handy for printing or bookmarking.

When LAMB isn't sure

  • "I'm not entirely sure I read this right" — LAMB answers but marks the answer. Check "Understood as" closely.
  • "Did you mean:" — the question could mean more than one thing. LAMB doesn't guess; it shows the options and you click the right one.
  • "I'm not sure what you mean" — ask more precisely, for example with a period (this year) or an animal number.
  • "I can't answer that" — the question is outside what LAMB can do (see below).

If something goes wrong, Try again appears.

When the answer is on another page

Some things are done elsewhere, such as registering a lambing or opening an import. LAMB then says "That is done on another page" and shows a button that opens it.

Follow-up questions

LAMB remembers the last few questions in the conversation, so you can carry on without repeating everything:

top 10 heaviest lambs this year and last year? only the ewe lambs show it as a bar chart

New conversation (top right) starts a new conversation.

Earlier chats

A conversation is saved to your account as soon as it has an answer. Earlier chats (top right) lists your conversations about the farm, newest first: open one to read it or carry on, or delete it (click the bin, then Delete).

  • Only you see your conversations — not the farm's other users.
  • What is kept is what you asked and how LAMB understood it — not the figures. When you open an earlier conversation, the answers are worked out again from the farm's data as it is today, and the top says which day the conversation was from.
  • Conversations belong to the farm you have selected: switch farm and a new conversation starts.

Renaming an animal

You can ask LAMB to name or rename an animal, for example rename 18-203 to Daisy.

  1. LAMB shows a card with the animal and the change: old name → new name.
  2. Nothing is saved until you press Confirm. Cancel changes nothing.

In Iceland the name also goes to Fjárvís. After you confirm, the change is recorded and waits; press Send to Fjárvís to send it straight away. If Fjárvís can't be reached, or you aren't allowed to send for this farm, the change waits — you can send it later from the animal's card or from the phone app. The animal's card shows a name that is waiting to be sent.

In Denmark the name is saved in LAMB as soon as you confirm.

Only the name can be changed, one animal at a time. Anything else is changed on the animal's card.

Groups

LAMB can tell you about your groups and do anything with them that the Groups page can. Every change comes with a card to confirm first.

  • See your groups — what groups do I have, which group has the most animals, what is the latest group created?. The list shows each group's head count, most animals first, and the day it was Created.
  • Create, rename, describe, recolour or delete a group — create a group called Sale lambs, rename Home field to Spring pen, make Home field blue, delete the group Meadow. Deleting a group keeps its animals on the farm.
  • Put animals in a group or take them out — one animal (put 18-203 in Home field), several (put 18-203 and 19-034 in Meadow), or picked the way you ask questions: put all lambs born 2026 in Home field, add the twin lambs to Meadow, take the rams out of Meadow, empty Home field.
  • Move or copy animals between groups — move all animals from Home field to Meadow, move the lambs from Home field to Meadow, copy the animals in Meadow to Home field (they stay in Meadow too).

The card shows the animals before anything is saved. An animal is never put in a group twice: one that is already there is left alone (in a move it only leaves the first group).

Files and photos

Click the paperclip on the left of the box (or drag a file onto it) to attach a spreadsheet or a photo. Add a few words if you like, and send.

Spreadsheet — import

Attach a .csv, .xlsx or .xls file. LAMB reads it in your browser and says how many rows it has, which columns, and whether it looks like a list of ear tags or a list of animals. The button opens the right import with the file ready — there you see every row, and nothing is saved until you confirm.

In Iceland animals come from Fjárvís, so a spreadsheet is always imported as ear tags there.

A photo of an animal

Attach a photo (JPEG, PNG or WebP) and say which animal it is, e.g. photo of 18-203 or Daisy. LAMB finds the animal and shows a card with the photo; it is saved to the animal when you press Confirm. If more than one animal fits, or none, the card asks which one you mean.

The photo shows at the top of the animal's page, under Photos on that page, and in the phone app. Before it is saved it is scaled down, and the location (GPS) a phone puts in photos is removed.

To find the animals that have a photo — or those that don't — ask: find all animals with a photo, ewes without a photo.

The file itself is not kept in the conversation: open it later and you see where the photo went, but a spreadsheet has to be attached again.

What LAMB doesn't do (yet)

  • Answer about daily gain, carcass weight, EUROP grading or pregnancy scans. LAMB understands the question but says "I can't answer this yet". Use Your autumn in numbers, Pregnancy scan or the register in question.
  • Delete anything but a group, or change any detail of an animal but its name and photos — and never without your confirmation.
  • Answer about years before your farm joined LAMB. In Iceland a farm's data is complete from the year it joined LAMB; animals that left the farm earlier, such as slaughtered lambs, aren't in the data. LAMB says so instead of giving a wrong answer.
  • Answer general questions unrelated to your farm. For help with LAMB itself, use Help.
  • Work offline, because the question is interpreted on a server.

What is sent?

To understand your question, its text is sent to an AI service within Europe, together with the last few questions in the conversation. Your farm's data is not sent — the AI only chooses what is being asked, and the answer is then computed from your farm's data under your own login. Files and photos you attach are not sent to the AI. Don't type personal information into the box.

Tips

  • Name a period if you don't mean this year: last year, all time.
  • Write the number as it is — 18-203, 0177. If more than one animal matches, LAMB asks for a more exact number.
  • One question at a time. Then follow up from the answer.
  • If an answer looks odd, read "Understood as" — rewording the question slightly is often enough.
