Finding animals — getting to know the animal list

Once animals are in the system (see Getting your animals into LAMB), the next thing to learn is how to find them again. The animal list exists both in the app and on the website — they behave a bit differently, so both are covered here.

In the app

Open the list

On the Dashboard, three tiles count animals: Ewes, Rams, and Lambs. Tapping one opens the animal list already filtered to that type — the screen title changes to match (e.g. "Ewes").

Note

There's no way to switch category (ewes/rams/lambs) from inside the list screen itself — go back to the Dashboard and tap a different tile.

The search field at the top shows the hint "Search by name, valnr, or lamb number". It matches on name, valnr (dashes don't matter — typing 17743 also finds 17-743), and lamb number.

Ear tag isn't searched here

Unlike the website, the app does not search ear tags. If you have the ear tag but not the name/valnr, scan it instead (see next).

Scan to find an animal

If an EID reader is connected (see Connect an EID reader to the app), you can scan any tag from anywhere in this list. If the animal is found, its record opens automatically with the message "Animal found: {name}"; if not, you'll see "No animal found with tag: {tag}".

Reading the results

Each row shows: a photo or species icon, name, valnr, ear tag, birth date, father (blue icon), mother (pink icon), offspring count if any are registered, and colored dots for each group the animal belongs to.

Opening an animal's record

Tapping a row opens the animal's record: Family, mating/heat registration, physical characteristics, additional information, breeding values, performance scores, group membership, and notes — with links onward to weighings, judgements, and DNA results.

If the list is empty

  • No animals registered at all: "No animals found" — "Animals will appear here once they're added to this settlement."
  • No results for your search: "No animals match your search" — "Try adjusting your search terms."

On the website

The Animals page on the website is identical for Iceland and Denmark — no region difference here, unlike the earlier guides in this series.

The search field shows the hint "Search by ear tag, valnúmer, name, or birth year..." — a wider search than the app, since ear tag is part of the search here.

Above the search are filters:

  • Tabs "All" / "Ewes" / "Rams" / "Lambs"
  • A birth year selector
  • A toggle to "Show dead animals" / "Hide living animals" (dead animals are hidden by default)

Results table

The columns are: Valnúmer/Lamb number, Name, Group (a popover to add or remove the animal from a group directly from the table), Gender, Birth year, Color, and Ear tag, plus a link to open the animal in a new tab. Results are paginated, 20 at a time ("Page X of Y").

Exporting

The CSV and Excel buttons fetch all rows matching the current filter — not just what's visible on screen.

Opening an animal's record

Clicking a row opens the animal's details (photo upload and additional information) in a modal on top of the page, not a separate page.

If the list is empty

The "Import Animals" button is always visible above the search, regardless of whether results are found — it links to the import screen covered in Getting your animals into LAMB.
